Ever seen someone in drag and longed to give it a go? Ever thought: “I wish I was that confident!”?. Come and try out drag for the first time in a safe, fun and supportive environment. In these sessions we spark and explore your new-found drag personas using various techniques such as use of the body in the space, movement and acting tools and tips. Here we will break gender apart as you find out what works for you.
All gender identities welcome! Whether you want to explore being a drag king or a drag queen or anything in between, this two-part introduction is for you.
The consecutive Monday sessions are for absolute beginners as well as for those who have some actor training. You don’t have to have Instagram-worthy contouring skills or a wardrobe to make Marc Jacobs weep - just come with a willingness to give it a go and an open mind. Unlock the parts of yourself that you long to meet!
During the workshops you'll learn:
• A brief introduction to drag history
• The means of exploring your own drag persona using various physical stage crafts
• Basic knowledge of how to build characters from the outside in and the inside out
• An introduction into the work of Laban to build character
• How to use your newly found personas in an improv setting with ease
You will, in the process, become:
• More confident
• At greater ease with creating authentic and instinctive characters
• More adept at challenging stereotypes and exploring gender through performance.
Workshop leader Francesca Reid is an actor, singer, comedian and presenter whose drag alter ego, the irreverent Brent Would, can be found actively exploring the spectrum of gender and societal norms to hilarious effect in and around queer spaces all over London and the South-East. Brent performs in the UK's premier drag improv comedy team, the Bareback Kings.
An applied theatre and improvisation practitioner, Francesca specialises in discovery through play and organic trauma resolution. She waters the seeds of others’ unearthed creativity using clown, commedia dell’arte, playback, forum, Laban, song and spoken word.
